Ajmer: Ajmer’s TADA court has acquitted terrorist Abdul Karim Tunda in the 1993 serial bomb blast case. Apart from this, two accused Irfan and Hameeduddin have been sentenced to life imprisonment. Tunda is currently lodged in Ajmer jail. After the demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, serial bomb blasts took place in trains of Kota, Lucknow, Kanpur, Hyderabad, Surat and Mumbai in 1993 and Tunda was an accused in these cases. The government lawyer said that on what basis Tunda was acquitted, he would comment after seeing the decision.
CBI had considered Tunda as the mastermind of these blasts and he was arrested from Nepal border in 2013. Terrorism cases are pending against Tunda at various places in the country. Tunda had allegedly trained youth to carry out terrorist activities in India. Along with Junaid, a Pakistani national, he had allegedly planned to carry out a terrorist attack during the Ganesh festival in 1998. Before being involved in the Mumbai bomb blasts, Tunda, along with Jalees Ansari, founded an organization ‘Tanzeem Islah-ul-Muslimeen’ with the aim of working for the Muslim community in Mumbai. Born in a poor family in Chhatta Lal Miyan area of Daryaganj in Central Delhi, Tunda started working as a carpenter in his native village Bazaar Khurd area of Pilkhua village in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.
He started helping his father, Tunda’s father used to smelt metals like copper, zinc and aluminum to earn a living. After the death of his father, Tunda started scrap work for livelihood and also did clothing business before becoming a radical jihadi terrorist. In the 80s, he came in contact with Lashkar-e-Taiba through operatives of Pakistani intelligence agency ISI. After coming, Tunda adopted fundamentalism.
Tunda married three times. At the age of 65, he married an 18-year-old girl for the third time. Tunda’s younger brother Abdul Malik is still a carpenter. He is the only member of Tunda’s family alive in India. Tunda, who fled India to Bangladesh in 1992, trained terrorists in bomb making in Bangladesh and later in Pakistan. Police said Tunda returned to India from Dhaka to plot bomb attacks in 1996 and 1998. Tunda was involved in almost all the bomb blasts that took place in Delhi between 1996 and 1998. After this, Tunda went from his home in Ghaziabad to Bangladesh via Pakistan in 1998. Tunda had also tried to carry out serial blasts just before the Commonwealth Games held in India in 2010.
