Tamil Nadu: Chief Minister Stalin said- CAA will not be allowed to be implemented in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday said the DMK government will never allow the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) to be implemented in Tamil Nadu as it discriminates against certain groups of people like Muslims and Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in the country. ,

Stalin, who is on a tour of Spain to attract investments in Tamil Nadu, cited Union Minister Shantanu Thakur’s claim on January 29 that the CAA would be implemented across the country within seven days.

The DMK leader also accused the main opposition AIADMK of voting in favor of amending the Act when it was introduced in Parliament. Expressing his stand on ‘X’, the CM criticized the opposition AIADMK, saying that if that party had not supported the Citizenship Amendment Bill, it would not have become law.

“AIADMK had then supported this Act. But the DMK, though in the opposition, along with like-minded parties, organized protests and collected two crore signatures (against the law), which were later handed over to the President, the CM said.

The CM informed that after DMK takes power in 2021, the government passed a resolution to withdraw the Act. “The DMK government will strongly oppose the implementation of CAA in Tamil Nadu. The people of the country are closely watching the anti-religious activities of the BJP and the fraudulent drama of the AIADMK supporting it (BJP’s actions),” Stalin said.

Commenting on the Chief Minister’s statement, senior lawyer KM Vijayan said, “Stalin’s statement that Tamil Nadu will not implement CAA can be challenged legally but it is impractical without the cooperation of the states. Since it does not include Muslims, this Act can be challenged on the grounds of religious discrimination.”

DMK organizing secretary and former Rajya Sabha MP RS Bharti said there are provisions in the Act by which state governments can stop the central government from implementing it in the states.

The CM had moved a resolution in the Assembly on September 8, 2021, urging the Center to repeal the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 to protect and ensure unity and communal harmony and maintain the secular principles enshrined in the Constitution. The resolution was passed by voice vote amid a walkout by BJP members.

“According to established democratic principles, a country should be governed taking into account the aspirations and concerns of people from all sections of the society. But it is observed that the CAA was passed in a way that it does not warmly support the refugees considering their plight, but rather discriminates against them according to their religion and their country of origin,” in the resolution.
