New Delhi: Modi cabinet approves launch of sulphur-coated fertilizers
New Delhi: The Department of Fertilizers, Ministry of Chemical Products and Fertilizers has paved the way for the development of the fertilizer sector by issuing a notification to all the directors general/directors of fertilizer manufacturing companies. This directive is a result of the approval given in the June 28, 2023 meeting of the Committee of the Cabinet on Economic Affairs (CCEA) for the launch of sulfur derived urea under the brand name “Urea Gold”. The official notification describes the introduction of urea derived from sulphur, packed in 40 kg bags, with an interesting twist. The pricing strategy for “Urea Gold” reflects a 45 kg bag of urea recovered with Neem, while maintaining a competitive MRP (maximum retail price) of Rs 266.50 including GST. This strategic measure is in line with the government’s commitment to promote sustainable and innovative farming practices. It is expected that urea derived from sulfur will play a fundamental role in improving soil health, optimizing the release of nutrients and guaranteeing better yields of crops. The decision to fix price at par for urea derived from Neem reflects a concerted effort to promote adoption of fertilizers while respecting the environment without imposing additional financial burden on farmers. The agriculture sector, the backbone of the Indian economy, witnesses the government’s continuous efforts to introduce progressive and ecological solutions. “Urea Gold” is set to change the rules of the game, meeting the changing needs of the farming community as well as addressing the environmental concerns associated with conventional fertilizers. Both farmers and industry experts have expressed optimism about the potential impact of sulfur-derived urea on crop health, nutrient management, and general agricultural productivity. The ministry’s notification acted as a catalyst for fertilizer manufacturers to align their production and distribution strategies with this new offering, ushering in a new era in sustainable farming practices.
