Manipur: Student turns old scooter into eco-friendly vehicle

Manipur: Albert Sarangthem, a student of Ingenieria Informatica, has brought innovation with his revolutionary project: ‘Samodon EV II’. This introduction will definitely leave a lasting impression on everyone present.

Taking advantage of his ingenuity, Albert Sarangthem, a computer engineering student at Manipur Institute of Technology (MIT), brilliantly transformed a Bajaj-150 retro scooter into an environmentally sustainable electric vehicle. Branded ‘Samodon EV II’, the stunning red electric scooter is a testament to the sales and devotion of this young inventor.

In 2022, Albert started a path towards sustainable transportation by building his first electric bicycle and naming it ‘Samdon EV I’. Currently, even greater progress has been made in promoting environmentally responsible modes of transportation, as evidenced by the conversion of traditional scooters.

Albert’s electric compositions are filled with cultural significance through the use of the word ‘Samadon’, which alludes to a revered flying horse in Meitei mythology, thereby infusing a distinct local identity.
Albert’s ecological mindset led him to take on the challenge of reviving an old scooter that had been abandoned and oxidized at his maternal grandfather’s house. Before replacing critical electrical elements such as the motor, battery and speed controller, remove all parts related to fuel handling, including the motor and carburetor. ¡The result was an impressive image transformation for this first vehicle ever designed!

Despite facing difficulties in obtaining essential goods as a result of ongoing ethnic conflicts, Albert’s determination overcame all obstacles. This results in vital components such as the battery, motor and speed regulator to retrofit your scooter.

Albert credits the development of his capabilities to the practical learning he received from online materials and the help of e-rickshaw workshops in Imphal. In 2022, MIT recognized Albert’s commitment and creativity by awarding him a Certificate of Recognition for building an outstanding model of an electric bicycle.

Albert’s ‘Samdon EV II’ not only represents a personal achievement but also serves as an inspiration for sustainable engineering among the community. Their journey shows how young minds can drive innovative solutions to achieve positive change, especially in ecological transportation.
