Kannur: Former DCC general secretary C Raghunath, who fought against Pinarayi Vijayan in the Dharmadom constituency in the 2021 assembly elections, has joined the BJP. Raghunath had announced his decision to break ties with the Congress three weeks ago, saying that he was disillusioned with the DCC leadership.

Announcing his decision to leave the party, Raghunath leveled allegations against the DCC leadership that it had become a group of sycophants and that factionalism in the party had grown so much that a person without any group cannot get a place in the organization. Since his humiliating defeat in the assembly elections, Raghunath was having a difficult relationship with the party leadership in the district. He had even alleged that contesting the elections was a bad decision because he did not get enough support from the party during the election campaign.

By bringing a senior leader from Congress into its camp, BJP has shown that they can gradually make inroads into the Congress and gain an edge in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
