Karnataka government takes strict action, assures safety to victim’s family
Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Tuesday assured the Assembly that strict action would be taken against the culprits who allegedly assaulted a woman, stripped her naked and hit her with an electric pole in a village in this district. , because his son eloped with a girl who was engaged to another man.
While ensuring safety to the young “lovers” and the victim’s family, it also highlighted the need for a change in the mindset of the society, so that these “inhuman” incidents are not repeated.
On learning that his 18-year-old daughter had eloped with the woman’s (24-year-old) son, around 20 of her family members came to the man’s house in New Vantamuri village around 00:30 am. Then they dragged his 55-year-old mother, who was alone at home, out, stripped her and took her to an electric pole.
Parameshwara said, “As soon as the information about the incident was received, the police immediately reached the spot, rescued the woman and took her to the hospital. Additionally, seven people have been arrested in connection with the case and necessary legal action is being taken against them.” ., giving details of the incident in the meeting.
Confirming that efforts are being made to trace the young couple so that no drastic steps can be taken to stop the incident, he said “these types of incidents should not happen, it is shameful for the society”. “Today, society generally accepts that young people fall in love and have sex, amid some incidents of honor killings… society needs to change. These drastic measures alone will not help, but the police will do everything we can. ..We will protect the young couple and the family, the government will not ignore the case in any way”, he said.
On Monday, Parameshwara met the victim in the hospital and the village where the incident took place.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, BJP MLA Sunil Kumar said that a civilized society which respects women a lot cannot accept such incidents and such things have not happened in Karnataka in recent times.
Saying that such incidents also raise questions about whether there is fear of law or police in the state, the MLA said at the time of the arrest of seven people in connection with the case, “Yes, there definitely must be.” Due to fear of police, this incident does not happen. “When we are celebrating 75 years of independence, stories of atrocities and cruelty against women cannot be tolerated.” Kumar directed the Home Minister to provide free treatment to the affected woman, security to her family and the government should guarantee that the young couple is protected and no extremist steps will be taken.
“The government should ensure that such incidents are not repeated and, if necessary, take stringent action against the accused (properties), as was done in Uttar Pradesh,” he said.
Other BJP MLA Shashikala Jole and Congress MLA Ashok Pattan also termed the incident as shameful for the society and asked the Home Minister to guarantee strict punishment to the culprits and said that they will not get freedom on bail.
