News agency PTI quoted Velusamy RK, President, Automotive Technology and Product Development, Mahindra & Mahindra, as saying, “We believe this is one of the boldest steps taken by the road transport ministry and we look forward to its implementation in India welcome.” It is also expected that the government will give some benefits to OEMs manufacturing safe cars to encourage them to continue doing so.
What is India NCAP?
As earlier Global NCAP and Latin NCAP used to give safety rating of vehicles while doing crash test. Similarly, now India will do this work. The only difference is that the crash test in India will more importantly test the Indian roads and driving behavior so that people can enjoy a safer driving experience.
Different countries have their own car assessment program (NCAP). In India it will be called Bharat New Car Assessment Program (BNCAP). The discussion on the need to start a car valuation program in India started in 2014-2015 and now preparations are on to start it. NCAP’s global vision is to make cars safer for adults in the front and children in the back. NCAP assesses how safe the car is in the event of an accident.
