Dalit family thrashed for bathing in tubewell in UP’s Khurja

Bulandshahr (IANS) | Four members of a Dalit family, including two minors and a former village headman, were thrashed by miscreants when they were bathing in a tubewell reservoir in Khurja town of Bulandshahr district. The former village head, Malkhan Singh, said that his family was taking a bath in the reservoir of a tube well on Thursday. Meanwhile, a group of 8-10 upper caste people aged 20-25 years from the same village came and attacked them.

We were taking a bath when some youths reached near the reservoir, Singh said. When the children reached the bank of the reservoir while playing, they threatened us not to bathe near them. When we objected, an argument broke out and they called more men and beat us with sticks.

Around five to seven members of my family, including women and children, were injured in the attack, he said.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bulandshahr, Shlok Kumar, said the police have been informed that a group of upper caste people thrashed people from the Dalit community.

A case has been registered against 10 accused at Khurja police station.

The SSP said, no arrest has been made so far. The injured are undergoing treatment at the district hospital and their condition is stable. Investigation is on and appropriate action will be taken.
