Security tightened at ED’s Kolkata office ahead of Rujira Banerjee’s appearance
Kolkata (IANS) | Security has been tightened at the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office in Kolkata ahead of the appearance of Rujira Narula Banerjee on Thursday for questioning in the coal smuggling case in West Bengal. Security has been beefed up at the Central Government Office (CGO) complex in Salt Lake, where the ED office is located, involving top officials of the Bidhannagar City Police to maintain law and order.
Meanwhile, entry of outsiders into the campus has been banned for the day.
People working in various offices of the CGO also got entry only after showing the identity card.
Rujira Narula Banerjee, wife of Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, was to appear by 11 am.
However, till the time of writing the news, she had not come to the CGO Complex.
A special team of ED officials has reached Kolkata from the probe agency’s national headquarters in New Delhi for questioning.
Rujira Narula Banerjee will be questioned on certain financial transactions that came to light during the investigation.
It is worth mentioning that on Monday, he was stopped from boarding the Dubai-bound flight by the Immigration Department at Kolkata airport citing ED’s lookout notice.
Soon after, he was served a notice by the ED to appear at 11 am on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Shantanu Basu termed the entire episode as a reflection of vendetta politics by the BJP and the central government.
Sen said the BJP is using central agencies out of desperation, unable to take on the Trinamool Congress politically.
BJP national vice-president and party’s Lok Sabha member Dilip Ghosh said the time for summons and questioning is over.
He said, the people of West Bengal now want to hear the news of the arrest.
