Congress in a bad state following election defeat! Basavaraj Bommai’s sharp remark

Bengaluru. Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, former Chief Minister of Karnataka and Haveri MP Basavaraj Bommai has made a scathing attack on the political position of the Congress. Questioning the electoral performance of the Congress, he claimed that the party’s influence at the national level has weakened due to continuous electoral defeats. Congress is no longer as strong a national political force as it was before. His statement has given a new issue to the debate of political allegations and counter-allegations between BJP and Congress. However, an important fact here is that the official recognition of the national party of Congress has not ended. The Indian National Congress is still a recognized national political party in the records of the Election Commission of India. Therefore, Bommai’s reported statement should be understood as a comment on the declining political influence of the Congress, and not as a notice of termination of the party’s legal recognition.
Congress targeted over election performance
Basavaraj Bommai has been criticizing the political strategy and organizational position of the Congress for a long time. He has been saying that the electoral strength of Congress has reduced in many states and the party has to depend on other opposition parties to maintain its political existence. Even in May 2026, Bommai had alleged that in many states except Karnataka, Congress is not in a strong position on its own. Linking this to the political weakness of the party, he had said that BJP is moving forward on public issues, while Congress is facing the challenge of saving its support base. BJP leaders argue that Congress should review the reasons for its continuous electoral challenges. Merely criticizing the central government does not strengthen the support base of any party. For this, organizational activism, local leadership and continuous work on voter issues is necessary.
Rhetoric increased in Karnataka politics
The political contest between Congress and BJP continues to be fierce in Karnataka. Despite the Congress government being in power in the state, BJP leaders have been raising questions about its policies, administrative decisions and organizational condition. Bommai had recently also targeted the Congress government over the election results of graduate and teacher constituencies of Karnataka Legislative Council. He claimed that these results indicate dissatisfaction towards the government. He said that the expectations of the people are not being fulfilled by the functioning of the Congress government. However, this is the political assessment of the BJP leader. The results of any particular election cannot be considered as the final proof of the public sentiment of the entire state. The political prestige of both the parties is at stake in Karnataka. While Congress is trying to maintain public support on the basis of its governance and welfare schemes, BJP wants to make the alleged shortcomings of the government the main issue.
Is Congress really no longer a national party?
In the context of Bommai’s statement, it is important to understand the difference between national party recognition and national political influence. In India, the Election Commission gives the status of national party to any political party on the basis of rules laid down. This status is linked to parameters like electoral performance, vote percentage obtained, Lok Sabha seats and recognition of the party in various states. Mere statement by a leader or losing in some elections does not automatically end the official recognition of the national party. As per the records available with the Election Commission, Congress is recognized as a national party. In the information issued by the Central Government in August 2025, Congress was also included among the six recognized national parties of the country. The Commission’s information related to political parties available in 2026 also supports this position. Therefore, questioning the legal status of Congress as a national party and calling its electoral impact weak are two different things.
Fight for political supremacy between BJP and Congress
BJP and Congress have been major rivals in the country’s politics for a long time. BJP has been making Congress’s organizational weaknesses and electoral performance a part of its political campaign for the last several years. On the other hand, Congress has been cornering BJP on issues like economic policies of the Central Government, unemployment, inflation and functioning of constitutional institutions. This confrontation between the two parties is not limited to the election results only. There are frequent differences between them on political leadership, ideological direction and national issues. Bommai’s comment is being seen in the context of this broader political competition.
Challenges and political possibilities of Congress
It is also true that Congress has faced many electoral setbacks in the last few years. However, the party has also formed governments by winning in various states. In the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, Congress won power by defeating BJP. After the defeat in that election, the then Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai himself accepted responsibility for the result and said that the BJP would review the reasons for the defeat. It is clear from this that political circumstances keep changing in different states and elections. The national position of any party cannot be assessed only on the basis of selective electoral defeats. The big question for political experts is how much Congress is able to strengthen the organization in the coming elections and what kind of electoral challenge it presents to the BJP.
