Major action taken following disease outbreak caused by contaminated water; six engineers suspended.
Nainital: Major administrative action has been taken in the matter of contaminated drinking water supply in Jeolikot area of Nainital district of Uttarakhand and people falling ill thereafter. Taking serious note of the alleged negligence in drinking water system, six engineers including the superintendent engineer of Jal Sansthan and Jal Nigam have been suspended. Apart from this, a warning has been issued to the Executive Engineer of the Water Institute. There is a stir in the drinking water department after action was taken against six engineers simultaneously.
Complaints about supply of contaminated water had come to light in Jeolikot area recently. Local people alleged that the quality of water coming from taps was poor and after consuming it, the health of many people started deteriorating. The matter became serious after information about a large number of people falling ill came to light. As complaints increased at the local level, questions started being raised on the arrangement of drinking water supply and its monitoring.
Considering the seriousness of the matter, the administration and concerned departments started investigating the situation. Along with taking samples of drinking water, aspects related to supply system, source, pipeline and water quality were investigated. The role of departmental officers was also reviewed at the initial level. After this, fixing the responsibility, it was decided to suspend six engineers associated with Jal Sansthan and Jal Nigam.
Superintendent Engineer level officers have also come under the scanner for action. It is clear from this that the matter was not just left as a low level technical flaw, but accountability of the senior officials involved in monitoring the drinking water supply has also been fixed. At the same time, the Executive Engineer of the Water Institute has been warned and asked to seriously monitor the arrangements so that such a situation does not arise again in the future.
Contaminated drinking water is a serious public health issue for any region. The action taken at the administrative level is aimed at ensuring accountability in the drinking water system. Further action can be taken against the suspended officers under departmental procedure. During the investigation, the responsibilities of officers and engineers, the monitoring done at their level and the facts related to any possible negligence will be reviewed.

In areas prone to contaminated water, people are advised to take precautions like boiling water, using clean water and regularly cleaning water tanks and utensils. If symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, fever, stomach ache or weakness appear in a person, it is important to get tested at a health center.
Technical glitches or pipeline leakage in drinking water schemes can also affect water quality. In case of leakage in the pipeline passing around sewers or drains, there is a risk of contaminated water reaching the drinking water line. Therefore, after such incidents, inspection of the pipeline network and repair of damaged parts becomes important.
The suspension of six engineers together in the case of spread of disease due to contaminated drinking water in Jeolikot is being seen as a major departmental action. After the warning to the Executive Engineer of the Water Institute, the pressure on the concerned departments to improve the drinking water system has also increased.
