Patna. The pace of the monsoon in Bihar currently appears to be slowing down. Despite sporadic rainfall across the state, humid heat is likely to trouble residents in most districts over the next two days. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for thunderstorms and light to moderate rain in 12 districts of North Bihar. Meanwhile, in the capital, Patna, and several other cities, humid and hot conditions will persist amidst intermittent cloud cover. Meteorologists state that while localized rainfall is possible in some districts, the likelihood of widespread rain remains low for now.
On Wednesday, the capital, Patna, experienced humid heat throughout the day. Although a slight drop in the maximum temperature was recorded, the sky remained mostly clear, causing the sun’s intense rays to leave people distressed during the afternoon. The strong sunlight made the heat feel particularly harsh for those out on the streets. However, winds blowing at approximately 20 km/h in the afternoon provided some relief from the humidity. Despite this, high atmospheric moisture levels meant people had to endure sticky, uncomfortable heat.
According to the Meteorological Department, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected in 12 North Bihar districts over the next 24 to 48 hours. There is also a possibility of lightning and strong winds in some areas. The department has advised people to avoid standing in open spaces, fields, or under trees during inclement weather and to stay in safe locations. Farmers have also been advised to plan their agricultural activities while keeping the weather conditions in mind.
The weather is likely to remain dry in other parts of the state for the time being. However, there remains a possibility of sporadic rainfall in one or two districts due to the influence of localized cloud formation. Meteorologists note that rainfall distribution remains uneven because the monsoon is not fully active; while some areas are receiving light rain, other districts remain dry despite cloudy skies, further intensifying the humidity.
Some areas of the state did record good rainfall on Wednesday. Rainfall of 40.0 mm was recorded in the Triveni and Valmiki Nagar areas of West Champaran district, while 28.2 mm of rain was logged in Daudnagar, Aurangabad district. The rainfall in these areas led to a slight drop in temperature, providing residents with some relief from the heat. However, the impact of the rain remained limited across most parts of the state.
Meteorologists explain that during the monsoon, when cloud cover persists without resulting in widespread rainfall, atmospheric humidity rises. This leads to increased sultriness; consequently, people feel hotter despite relatively lower temperatures. This is the prevailing situation in most districts of Bihar at present. If the monsoon becomes active again in the coming days, rainfall intensity may increase, likely leading to a drop in temperature.
Health experts have also advised caution given the humid weather conditions. They recommend drinking plenty of water, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, and wearing light cotton clothing. Children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions are urged to be particularly vigilant, as humid weather increases the risk of issues such as dehydration and heat stress.
Weather fluctuations are also impacting the agricultural sector. Farmers in areas that received good rainfall expect benefits for paddy and other Kharif crops, while those in regions with insufficient rain are awaiting a revival of the monsoon. Agricultural experts state that good rainfall in the coming days would accelerate farming activities.
The Meteorological Department has urged the public to stay updated on weather reports and follow safety guidelines during thunderstorms. People are specifically advised to avoid open fields, water bodies, and tall trees when lightning occurs. The administration is also on alert regarding potential adverse weather, and relevant departments have been instructed to maintain necessary preparedness.
Currently, the monsoon is having a mixed impact across Bihar. While some districts are finding relief from the rain, humid heat is adding to the discomfort of people in most other areas.
