Severe heat wave grips Tamil Nadu, with temperatures crossing 100 degrees Fahrenheit at six places

Tamil Nadu: Sunday saw a dual effect of the weather, with intense heat recorded in many areas, while light rain was forecast in some areas. According to a press release issued by the Chennai Meteorological Department on Sunday, temperatures reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit or more at six locations in the state, leading to heatwave-like conditions during the day.
According to the department, the highest daytime temperature on Sunday was recorded at Thondi in Ramanathapuram district, where the mercury reached 103.38 degrees Fahrenheit. Nagapattinam recorded 102.8 degrees Fahrenheit, Chennai Meenambakkam 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit, Chennai Nungambakkam 101.48 degrees Fahrenheit, Madurai Airport 101.12 degrees Fahrenheit, and Adhirampattinam 100.04 degrees Fahrenheit. These data clearly indicate that the effects of intense heat and heatwaves were widely felt in many parts of the state.
The Meteorological Department stated that daytime temperatures in most parts of Tamil Nadu are currently well above normal, causing people to experience hot winds and humidity. The heatwave continues to affect many urban areas, including Chennai.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has also issued an update regarding rainfall. The low-pressure area extending from South Gujarat to Kerala has experienced some disruption, weakening the weather system. Due to this change, moderate rain with strong winds is expected at one or two locations in the Western Ghats districts from Monday (July 6) to July 8.
Also, light rain may occur at one or two locations in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. According to the department, this rainfall will not be widespread, but will be confined to a few limited areas. While light rain is likely to bring some relief from temperatures in some locations, the overall heatwave is likely to persist.
The Meteorological Department has issued a special forecast for Chennai and Puducherry. Light rain is expected in both cities on Monday, although the maximum daytime temperature is expected to remain around 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This clearly indicates that despite the rain, there is little hope of complete relief from the heat.
According to weather experts, a deep depression in the northern Bay of Bengal, especially near the coasts of northern Odisha and West Bengal, weakened into a depression on Sunday morning. The system was initially in the state of a cyclonic storm, but its intensity has now decreased. However, the possibility of weather changes in coastal areas due to its impact remains, and monitoring is ongoing.
The department has stated that even though the system has weakened, the possibility of sudden weather changes in the sea and coastal areas cannot be ruled out. Therefore, it has advised maintaining vigilance in the affected areas.
Overall, Tamil Nadu is currently experiencing mixed weather conditions. While temperatures in many districts have soared above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, creating intense heat and heatwave conditions, light to moderate rainfall is forecast in the Western Ghats and coastal areas. Chennai and surrounding areas are also expected to experience heatwaves despite light rain.
The Meteorological Department is continuously monitoring the situation and will periodically update on any changes in the weather in the coming days.
