Chabutra: An interesting tradition from ancient times

Lifestyle: The platform built outside the old Indian houses was not just a simple construction, but it was an important part of the lifestyle, social system and needs of that time. Even today, this high platform can be seen outside many houses in villages and old cities, which reminds of the traditions of that period. In earlier times, the means of entertainment and socializing were limited, so in the evening people used to gather on platforms outside their houses and talk. Here neighbors used to inquire about each other’s well-being, share the day’s affairs and strengthen social ties. In this way the platform became an important center of social interaction. A major use of the platform was also to maintain the privacy of the house. When a guest came, he was made to sit on the platform outside instead of being taken directly inside the house. Due to this, the personal life of the people living inside the house, especially women, remained safe and the household work also continued without any hindrance. Apart from this, the platform was also quite useful for everyday tasks. Women used to sit here and do work like cleaning grains, cutting vegetables, drying papads and pickles. In winter it was also a favorite place for sunbathing and rest. One practical advantage of the platform was that it protected the house from rain, mud and dust. Due to its height from the ground, water and dirt did not directly enter the house and there was some protection from small insects. In this way, the platform of old times was not just a construction, but an important part of social life, family comfort and security. This is the reason that even today, when old houses are talked about, the platform is definitely mentioned and it is remembered as a special identity.
