Andhra: New life for twins

Vijayawada: In a remarkable medical achievement, Akkineni Hospitals has successfully treated and discharged healthy twin babies who were born at just 26 weeks of gestation under extremely critical conditions. Shanmukha Devi delivered a baby boy and a baby girl prematurely at only 26 weeks of pregnancy. The high-risk delivery was successfully managed by Dr B Soumya. Immediatelyafter birth, the twins were admitted to the hospital’s advanced Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and placed under the care of the Neonatology team led by Dr D Narendra Babu, Head of Neonatology, along with Dr M Puranjay, Fellow in Neonatology.

At birth, the female baby weighed just 812 grams, while the male baby weighed 850 grams, placing both infants in the extremely low birth weight category and making their survival a significant medical challenge. The babies were treated in the hospital’s state-of-the-art Level-3A NICU, where they received continuous monitoring, advanced neonatal care, specialised nutritional support and expert clinical management for nearly 62 days.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the medical team, both babies made steady progress. At the time of discharge, the female baby weighed 1.9 kilograms and the male baby had reached 2 kilograms. Hospital authorities said both infants were discharged in good health without infections, major complications or other co-morbid conditions, marking a significant success in neonatal care.

Throughout the treatment period, Akkineni Hospitals extended financial assistance to the family and ensured access to advanced medical care at affordable costs. The hospital management also provided emotional and humanitarian support to the parents during the prolonged treatment process.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Narendra Babu said that managing babies born at just 26 weeks is extremely challenging and requires intensive, specialised care. He attributed the successful outcome to timely intervention, advanced NICU facilities, the commitment of the neonatal team and the cooperation of the parents. The parents expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses and hospital management for their unwavering support and exceptional care that helped save the lives of their children.
