Chennai: Accused arrested in sexual harassment case of software engineer

Tamil Nadu Tamil Nadu: Police have arrested a young man in connection with the sexual harassment of a female software engineer in Ramapuram area of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. The incident occurred when the victim was returning home from work.
According to the information, the 21-year-old woman is a resident of Ramapuram area and is working as a software engineer in an IT company of the area. Last Thursday, she was returning home after finishing work as usual. Meanwhile, a young man riding a motorcycle harassed him.
It is alleged that the young man showed obscene pictures to the woman from his mobile phone and sexually harassed her. The woman got scared by this sudden incident and raised an alarm on the spot. When she shouted, the accused youth ran away from there.
After the incident, the victim immediately lodged a complaint at Ramapuram police station. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case and started investigation. Police identified the accused with the help of CCTV footage of the surrounding area and other technical evidence.
Investigation revealed that Murugan (29), a resident of Bhuthapedu area of Maduravoyal, was involved in this incident. After ascertaining his identity, the police took action and arrested him on Friday.
Police officials said that the accused is being interrogated and all aspects related to the incident are being investigated. It is also being ascertained whether the accused has been involved in any such case before or not.
After this incident, concern regarding the safety of women has increased in the area. Locals said police patrolling and surveillance should be further strengthened to prevent such incidents in public places.
Cases of street molestation and harassment of women working in the IT sector remain a matter of constant concern. Such incidents raise questions about the safety of women returning home from work.
Police have said that prompt action is being taken in such cases and special surveillance arrangements are being strengthened to ensure the safety of women.
At present, accused Murugan has been arrested and further legal action has been started. The investigation of the case is ongoing and the police is taking further action based on the statement of the victim.
