Punjab: Controversy erupts over free books in ‘CM-branded’ bags

Punjab: The move to distribute free books to children under the Chief Minister’s education scheme in Punjab has become a subject of controversy. The books are being provided in “CM-branded” bags, which the opposition and some citizens are calling a case of political propaganda. Education department officials stated that this initiative was launched to provide quality educational materials to students. Under the scheme, books are being provided free of charge to primary and secondary school children. However, the bags in which these books are being distributed bear the Chief Minister’s name and photo.
Political parties have reacted sharply to this move. The Punjab Congress and other opposition parties say that the scheme has turned into a publicity campaign under the guise of providing educational benefits. The opposition said that while it is important to provide free books to children, such “branded bags” send the impression that the scheme is solely for publicity. However, government officials and the Education Minister have clarified that the purpose is solely to provide books and study resources to children. He said, “The CM’s name is inscribed on the bags so that this scheme reaches children as part of a government effort and boosts their enthusiasm. It has nothing to do with politics.”
Many educators have welcomed this initiative. They say that if it increases children’s access to education and educational materials, it is a positive step. However, they suggested that such measures should not include any publicity or political messages in the future. Family and guardians are also divided on this issue. Some say that providing free books to children reduces their financial burden and helps them with their studies. However, some parents and citizens view it as government propaganda and are criticizing it. Education department officials stated that the state government is continuously striving to ensure that every child has access to educational materials.
They stated that the intention is not to impose any political message on children or parents during the distribution of books and bags. Experts say that transparency and clear objectives are essential in government schemes. Making any program related to education or development a vehicle for politics could undermine the spirit of the scheme. Amid this controversy, the state government has ensured that books and educational materials reach all students on time. Officials say the name and branding on the bags are intended solely to increase recognition and awareness of the scheme.
