Tamil Nadu: The Chennai Division of Southern Railway achieved record revenue from freight operations in the 2025-26 financial year. According to a press release issued by the railway division, a total of ₹1,289.78 crore was generated from freight services during this period, which is considered one of the highest achievements ever.
The Chennai Railway Division not only saw an increase in revenue during this period but also launched several new freight services, strengthening the cargo transport network. According to railway officials, this achievement is the result of improved operations, the launch of new routes, and logistical improvements.
In a significant achievement, iron pipes were successfully transported from Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Chennai to Ponmalai (Golden Rock – Boiler Plant area) for the first time. This new initiative further strengthens the railway’s role in transporting heavy industrial goods.
Additionally, to promote environmentally friendly transportation, the Chennai Railway Division has also introduced freight transportation through electric autos. This step is considered important in reducing carbon emissions and encouraging green transportation.
As part of the expansion of freight services, container transport services for the Central Warehousing Corporation have been launched from the Korukkupet Freight Terminal to the Noli area under the Delhi Division. This has boosted logistics connectivity between North India and South India.
Railway officials also stated that the Chennai Division has regained some of its previously lost key freight services, improving its freight network. The division is continuously working to increase its capacity and handle new types of cargo.
The Railways states that in the future, the focus will be on connecting more industrial areas, developing new freight lines, and providing faster logistics services. This will not only increase revenue but also benefit regional trade and industries.
This record earnings and expansion is being seen as a major achievement of the Chennai Railway Division, which is a significant step towards further strengthening the freight services of Indian Railways.
