Successful bowel surgery using robotic technology at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre

Jeddah: The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Jeddah performed robotic-assisted bowel surgery on a young child.

The Saudi Press Agency reported on Wednesday that the child, just 2 years old and weighing approximately 10 kg, was diagnosed with Hirschsprung’s disease, a congenital condition that affects the normal functioning of the intestine and can lead to severe constipation and intestinal obstruction.

The medical team performed the Soave pull-through procedure, which is difficult in young children due to the limited pelvic space and the distance between the nerves, muscles, and blood vessels involved in bowel function.

The center stated that extreme surgical precision is required to preserve surrounding tissue and achieve a good outcome.

The Soave technique involves removing the affected part of the colon and connecting a healthy part to restore bowel function. In this case, robotic assistance provided improved visualization and accuracy during the procedure.
