51 people die every day in road accidents: Joint Commissioner of Southern Traffic Police

Tamil Nadu: Vijayakumar, Joint Commissioner of Chennai South Traffic Police, stated that an average of 51 people die in road accidents every day in Tamil Nadu.
A road safety awareness camp was held in Vepery on Wednesday for women workers who deliver food, medicines, and groceries in Chennai. Additional Commissioner of Chennai Traffic Police, Karthikeyan, presided over the camp and distributed helmets to 250 women workers.
Chennai South Traffic Police Joint Commissioner Vijayakumar, who participated as a special invitee, said that when we leave home, our intention should be to return home safely. Every day, 480 to 485 people die in road accidents across the country. Statistics show that in Tamil Nadu alone, an average of 51 people die in road accidents every day, or 2 people every hour.
In Chennai, 536 people died in road accidents in 2024 and 496 in 2025.
We have reduced road accidents and deaths through awareness campaigns. In Chennai, 1.8 million people are fined annually for traffic violations. He said that cooperation between pedestrians and drivers is crucial to reducing traffic-related deaths.
