The hearing in the copyright case of A.R. Rahman’s song has been postponed till February 13.

Delhi: The Supreme Court has postponed the hearing of classical singer Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Thakar’s appeal against composer A.R. Rahman for copyright infringement of a song until the 13th of this month.
Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Thakar has appealed to the Supreme Court against the September 2025 decision of the Delhi High Court’s division bench, which overturned a single judge’s order in the Veera Raja Veera case.
Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Thakar has filed a lawsuit seeking compensation for the song “Veera Raja Veera” from the second part of “Ponniyin Selvan,” claiming that its music was copied from the song “Shiva Stuti” composed by his father, Nasar Faiyazuddin Thakar, and uncle, Zaheeruddin Thakar.
In April 2025, a single judge of the Delhi High Court observed that the song “Veera Raja Veera” from the film Ponniyin Selvan was similar to the song “Shiva Stuti,” and A.R. Rahman told the court that he was inspired by the song “Shiva Stuti” and composed the song “Veera Raja Veera.” He ordered composer A.R. Rahman and Madras Talkies to pay ₹2 crore to the Delhi High Court Registrar for copyright infringement.
The single judge also cleared the copyright infringement case and ordered that the late father (Faiyasuddin Thakar) and uncle (Zaheeruddin Thakar) of Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Thakar, popularly known as the Junior Thakar brothers, be given credit for the song.
The Delhi High Court division bench, which considered A.R. Rahman’s appeal against that order, set aside the single judge’s order. “In this case, we are of the view that the credit for the song belongs to A.R. Rahman’s appeal is accepted. The division bench ruled, “We set aside the single judge’s objectionable order.”
Classical singer Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Thakar had appealed against the order in the Supreme Court on January 3. In it, he argued that the division bench’s decision to set aside the single judge’s order was wrong and that the music for the song “Veera Raja Veera” was copied from the song “Shiva Stuti” composed by his father, Nasr Faiyazuddin Thakar, and uncle, Zaheeruddin Thakar.
The case was listed for hearing on Tuesday before a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and N.V. Ancharia. The judges adjourned the hearing until February 13.
