District-level committee to abolish the orderly system: Government tells SC

Tamil Nadu: The government informed the Chennai High Court that an order has been issued to constitute district-level committees to abolish the orderly system in Tamil Nadu.
The Chennai High Court had ordered the complete abolition of the orderly system in the police department in 2022. A bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and C. Kumaraappan had alleged that the authorities had not fully implemented the order.
During the hearing of the case, the Tamil Nadu DGP filed a report stating that there was not a single person working as an orderly in Tamil Nadu. Dissatisfied with this report, the High Court ordered the Chief Secretary and the Home Secretary to appear before the court and become respondents in the case to ascertain the truth.
Furthermore, the Supreme Court had suggested that a committee be formed in each district, headed by the Governor, to abolish the orderly system.
When the case came up for hearing before the bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and C. Kumaraappan on Thursday, Principal Government Counsel P.S. Raman, appearing for the Tamil Nadu government, filed a government order stating that a government order had been issued to constitute a committee in each district to abolish the orderly system.
He also sought time to properly implement the government order and file a report on the matter. The judges accepted this and adjourned the hearing for four weeks.
