Varanasi has made history by shooting in Antarctica. Is this the first Indian film to do so

Mumbai:
SS Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu’s highly anticipated film, Varanasi, is already captivating film enthusiasts worldwide. The film is progressing rapidly and is slated for a grand theatrical release on April 7, 2027.

Adding to the excitement, Varanasi has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Indian film to be shot in Antarctica. Braving the extreme cold, unpredictable weather, and snow-covered landscapes, Rajamouli has planned crucial sequences in one of the Earth’s most challenging and regulated environments. With this achievement, Varanasi joins an exclusive global list, becoming only the fifth film in the world to have captured visuals in Antarctica. Due to the harsh weather conditions and strict environmental regulations, only a handful of international productions have previously managed to film there.

According to sources, the film’s team is scheduled to travel to Antarctica in the last week of February, marking a historic moment for Indian cinema. “Films previously shot in Antarctica include The Thing, Eight Below, Encounters at the End of the World, and Antarctica: A Year on Ice. Now, Varanasi joins this exclusive club, becoming the fifth film to be shot there—and the first from India,” a source revealed.

The source further added that Varanasi has already been filmed in Kenya, South Africa, and several other major international locations, showcasing the project’s massive scale and global vision.

Rajamouli is once again pushing cinematic boundaries, and Varanasi is poised to become one of the most ambitious and visually stunning Indian films ever made.
