Jalandhar: Teacher-turned-author shows deep understanding of human emotions

Jalandhar: In an age of rushed conversations and short-lived connections, teacher-writer Harpal Singh draws attention to what is often overlooked: the unspoken emotions that make up human relationships. Through two recently published literary books, a novel and a short story collection, Singh carefully explores love, emotional distance, silence, and courage, translating the wisdom of a lifelong teacher into written form. Harpal Singh, a resident of Jande village, near Garhdiwala in Hoshiarpur district, draws on his cultural roots and life experiences to bring authenticity to his work. Besides teaching and writing, he is also a prolific translator, working extensively between English and Punjabi, facilitating the exchange of literary ideas across languages and cultures. Harpal Singh, who has been a government-sector English and Social Studies teacher at Government Senior Secondary School, Daffar since 2000, brings decades of classroom experience, observation, and empathy to his writing. His novel, In the Space Between, reflects this depth. Instead of relying on dramatic plot twists, the story contemplates love built through pauses, silences, and emotional gaps. It explores how relationships change in moments of closeness and separation, revealing the delicate spaces where memories, longing, and love quietly reside. The novel’s strength lies in its control. It reflects real life, where human relationships are often formed and tested in moments of waiting, misunderstanding, and emotional distance. The book’s inclusion in this year’s Delhi Book Fair, from January 10th to 18th, gives Singh’s literary voice greater recognition. Alongside the novel, Singh’s short story collection, Scars and Silence, deepens his exploration of the human condition. This thirteen-story collection explores love, loss, and patience through characters who endure emotional wounds with quiet dignity. Here, silence is powerfully expressed, revealing pain, strength, and survival without excessive words or pretension. Both works have one thing in common: the belief that silence is never empty. Singh’s writing reveals suppressed grief, unspoken love, and inner intention. His writing is simple yet layered, encouraging readers to pause and reflect on their own emotional journeys. Both In the Space Between and Scars and Silence are available on major online shopping platforms, making them accessible to a wider audience. Together, they showcase Harpal Singh’s transition from the classroom to the page, where lessons in empathy, understanding, and humanity abound, and where silence often speaks louder than words.
