Indore: Nurse suspended after child’s thumb gets chopped off at MGM Medical College

Madhya Pradesh: A serious case of medical negligence has come to light in the New Chest Ward of MGM Medical College, where a one-and-a-half-month-old baby’s thumb was severed during treatment. Following the incident, the college administration suspended the nurse on duty and withheld the salaries of three nursing in-charges for one month each.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when a nurse was inserting an intracatheter for a baby. Due to alleged negligence, she allegedly used scissors carelessly, resulting in the child’s thumb being severed. The incident was highlighted in a local newspaper on January 8th, prompting administrative action. The nurse on duty, Aarti Shrotiya, was immediately suspended.
MGM Medical College Dean Dr. Arvind Ghanghoria stated that the administration took action within 24 hours due to the seriousness of the incident. He added that patient safety is paramount and negligence in treatment will not be tolerated. He stated that further action would be taken after the investigation report was submitted and promised to improve medical care at hospitals affiliated with MGM Medical College.
A high-level investigation committee has been formed under the leadership of MY Hospital Superintendent Dr. Ashok Yadav. Members include pediatrician Dr. Nirbhay Mehta, MYH Deputy Superintendent Dr. Rohit Baderia, and Nursing Superintendent Dayawati Dayal. The committee recorded the statement of the nurse concerned on Thursday and is scheduled to submit its report on Friday.
