Paddy harvesting complete: Vegetable cultivation in the fields in full swing

Karnataka: Farmers are preparing vegetable crops to compensate for the loss of paddy crops due to unseasonal rains. Fields are being prepared for cultivation of various vegetables, including peanuts and potatoes.
Rice, the main crop of the region, has been harvested, and most farmers have suffered losses. With the end of the rainy season and the onset of winter, sowing of vegetable seeds has been completed. Peanut sowing has accelerated.
Green leafy vegetables and vines are now sprouting in the fields around Gokarna. Farmers are seen busy caring for the sprouted vegetable plants.
Vegetables grown in the Gokarna region are in high demand. People prefer the region because of the fresh availability of a wide variety of vegetables. Every day, hundreds of quintals of vegetables are shipped to the markets of Sirsi, Yellapur, Karwar, and Hubli. Local farmers say they prioritize growing essential vegetables such as eggplant, bitter gourd, banana, pumpkin, cucumber, and pumpkin.
“Selling vegetables door-to-door is a common practice in Gokarna. Every day, women pick fresh vegetables from the fields and take them to sell in exchange for silver coins. Some women also want to grow peanuts and sweet potatoes along with vegetables,” says farmer Savitri Shukru Gowda.
“The vegetables grown in the sandy soil here are very tasty and popular. The vegetable plants are growing now, and the new crop will be available in a few days. The tradition of selling fresh vegetables door-to-door has been around since ancient times,” she said.
