A married woman committed suicide after being harassed by her husband; arrest proceedings initiated.

Raigarh. Distressed by her husband’s harassment, a married woman hanged herself. The incident occurred in the village of Kotrimal, under the jurisdiction of the Gharghodha police station. On the afternoon of November 9, 2025, 28-year-old Asamoti, also known as Dila Birhor, a resident of Basantpur Dharamjaigarh, hanged herself from a mango tree. The postmortem examination revealed that her husband, Sunta Birhor, had been assaulting and harassing her daily. Based on the evidence, the Gharghodha police registered a case of abetment to suicide against the accused husband, arrested him, and remanded him in custody.
The investigation revealed that Sunta Birhor and the deceased, Dila Birhor, had married in 2019 after a love affair. After marriage, the two lived together in Basantpur for a few years, during which time they had a son. After the birth of their son, the dispute between the husband and wife escalated, and Sunta Birhor left his wife and child and returned to his village, Kotrimal, where he remained separated from her for nearly four years. Before Diwali in October 2025, he took his wife back, but the domestic strife and violence remained unchanged.
On the morning of the incident, Sunta Birhor had quarreled with and assaulted his wife. That same afternoon, Dila Birhor committed suicide by hanging herself from a mango tree in Main Singh Rathiya’s Kajubari. Upon receiving the information, a magisterial inquest, panchnama, and postmortem were conducted in the presence of the Executive Magistrate and the FSL team from Raigarh. The statements of the family members and the postmortem report confirmed that the deceased had committed suicide due to harassment from her husband.
Based on the inquest, Gharghodha police yesterday registered a case under Section 108 of the Criminal Procedure Code (Crime No. 302/2025) against Sunta Birhor, son of Hariram Birhor, 25, a resident of Kotrimal village, Gharghodha police station, and arrested him. The accused was remanded to judicial custody today.
