Jalandhar: Miani School becomes shelter for 306 flood victims

Jalandhar: Schools are often called temples of education, but after the recent floods, PM Shri High School in Miani has proved that schools can also be centres of compassion, care and community service. Going beyond their traditional role, the teachers and staff of the school have come together to provide the necessary help to the flood-affected people, providing not just shelter but also whole-hearted support. Since August 25, the school has been functioning as a flood relief camp, where 306 displaced persons – men, women, children and the elderly – are being sheltered. Seven classrooms have been converted into living spaces and essential facilities like clean drinking water, toilets, bathrooms and regular meals have been arranged in collaboration with local authorities and NGOs. Principal Parminder Kaur said, “When people are in pain, we cannot just stand by.

Our school is proud to be a part of this relief operation. All the staff is making every effort to help the people staying in the relief camp.” Balwinder Singh, the school’s computer teacher, has taken on the responsibility of managing the daily operations of the camp. He is often seen staying overnight at the school to ensure that those staying there are comfortable and safe. His tireless efforts reflect the spirit of selfless service that has been central to the school’s role during this crisis. The dedication of the school team cannot be overlooked. District Education Officer (Secondary Education), Lalita Arora, praised the teachers’ commitment during the emergency. She said, “In times of natural disaster, it is important that we stand by each other. Schools are not just meant to impart education; they also serve as a pillar of society when disaster strikes.” Arora himself visited the relief camp at Miani, where he met 17 children who had taken refuge with their families. Many of these children had lost their school bags and books in the floods or left them behind in the hurry to flee. Knowing this, he arranged for new books and writing materials to meet the children’s immediate needs. In an encouraging message, he told the children, “Education gives us the strength to face any challenge. Don’t let these tough times stop you. Keep learning, keep growing.” Arora was accompanied by Deputy District Education Officer (Primary Education) Amandeep Sharma, who assured the children and their parents that their education will not be interrupted. He stressed that the education department will provide all possible help to continue their studies smoothly.
