Himachal: Roads were closed, hearts opened in Sissu

Himachal Pradesh: Following the recent natural calamity in the tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti, many tourists and heavy/light vehicle drivers got stranded in the Sissoo area due to blocked roads and disrupted connectivity. Amidst this challenging situation, local community organisations came forward with selfless dedication and provided relief and assistance, which is now being considered as a true example of humanity and service. Deputy Commissioner of Lahaul-Spiti and Chairperson of District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Kiran Bhadana, today visited the Sissoo area and personally appreciated the commendable efforts made by the local organisations – Mooling Mahila Mandal, Yuvak Mandal, Gondhla Vyapar Mandal and Ghepan Mandir Samiti. “These community efforts are not only laudable but also exemplify the highest ideals of humanity in times of adversity,” Bhadana said during her visit. “Although the government and administration are committed to relief and rehabilitation during disasters, the active participation of civil society and local groups further enhances the effectiveness of these efforts.” For several days, these community organisations have been providing free breakfast, lunch and dinner to the stranded people without any expectations. This act of service is purely driven by compassion, hospitality and a sense of deep responsibility towards fellow human beings.

DC Bhadana stressed that such community-driven initiatives are helpful in strengthening disaster management systems and speeding up administrative responses. “At a time when tourists from outside the region were facing uncertainty and inconvenience, the local community of Sissu came forward and welcomed them and ensured that no one slept hungry,” he said. He further said that the people of Lahaul-Spiti have always displayed extraordinary unity in times of crisis. “Despite harsh weather and inhospitable geography, the district has maintained a strong tradition of human values. The selfless service rendered by these local groups proves that collective efforts can overcome even the toughest challenges.” The Deputy Commissioner also highlighted the relentless efforts of the DDMA in carrying out rescue and road restoration operations on a war footing to ensure safe movement of stranded travellers.

He said the role played by local organisations during the crisis underlines the critical importance of community participation in any disaster response mechanism. “Joint efforts of the administration and the community present a comprehensive solution to disaster management. The work done by these groups at Sissoo will be remembered as a model for disaster response and community cooperation in future,” he said. During his visit, Deputy Commissioner Bhadana interacted directly with the local residents to hear their problems and assess their immediate requirements. He assured them of continued support from the district administration and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to provide all possible assistance. Deputy Superintendent of Police Rashmi Sharma, Block Development Officer Dr Vivek Guleria and other officials were also present during the visit. The response of the Sissoo community not only serves as a ray of hope in difficult times but is also a shining example of what can be achieved by integrated action between society and the administration. The resilience and compassion displayed here will undoubtedly inspire others in the state and beyond.
