Pakistan is pushing back water in Ravi: Ajnala MLA Dhaliwal

Punjab: Ajnala MLA Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal has accused Pakistan of building high embankments on the Ravi river in its territory to divert the flow of water towards India with the intention of causing floods. After visiting border villages like Ghonewala, Dariya Musa, Kot Razada, Chaharpur etc. located near the Ravi river in Ajnala assembly constituency, Dhaliwal said that the fertile agricultural land of villages in Pathankot, Gurdaspur and Amritsar is getting affected by this move. The Ravi river, which enters Pakistan through Ajnala and Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur, is in full spate. He said that this could inundate BSF posts located across the border fence.
The MLA said that now Pakistan wants to harm the border villagers economically by submerging their agricultural land, which is their only source of income. He said that this move is part of anti-India conspiracies. Earlier it used drones to smuggle drugs and weapons. Now, the river water is being used for anti-India activities. He met gram panchayats, farmers, agricultural labourers and border residents to review the current situation of possible floods and also held a meeting with BSF officers and jawans posted at Kamalpur border outpost to gather information on the rising water level in the Ravi river. He said the government has already issued instructions to the Deputy Commissioners for Girdawari to provide compensation for crop damage. He said a grant of Rs 276 crore has been released for cleaning of drains, repairing broken embankments and other necessary measures.
