SAIL plans to import coking coal from Mongolia

New Delhi New Delhi: India’s state-owned steel company, Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), plans to carry out a trial import of coking coal from Mongolia this month. The move is aimed at diversifying India’s coking coal sources, following disruptions in coal supplies from Australia.
India, the world’s second-largest raw steel producer, meets 85% of its coking coal requirement through imports, with Australia being the major supplier. Despite this, India is now looking for alternative sources, including Mongolia, Russia, the US, Canada and Indonesia.
