Punjab: 4 smugglers arrested, 5 kg heroin seized

Punjab: Police have busted a cross-border drug smuggling gang and arrested four smugglers. 5.06 kg heroin was recovered from their possession in two cases. The arrested persons have been identified as Gurjant Singh alias Kalu resident of Bachhiwind village (Amritsar), Jagjit Singh resident of Rania village (Amritsar), Sahil Kumar resident of Ghariala village (Tarn Taran) and Rinku resident of Basti Dune Wali Guru Har Sahai Ferozepur. Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said that the arrested persons were in touch with Pakistan-based drug smugglers who were using drones to smuggle drugs across the border. The drugs were being supplied in various areas of Amritsar.
He said that two FIRs have been registered in this regard under relevant sections of the NDPS Act at Cantt and Sadar Amritsar police stations. Sharing details of the first case, Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that based on credible intelligence, the police arrested Gurjant Kalu and Jagjit Singh from the Mahal Bypass area and seized 3.067 kg of heroin from them. Similarly, police teams of CIA Staff-1 led by Inspector Amolakdeep Singh arrested Sahil Kumar and Rinku and seized an additional 2 kg of heroin from them. He said they were in the drug trade for the last one year. Preliminary investigation revealed that Jagjit Singh had earlier returned from Italy and was facing a drug smuggling case. He was wanted by the Amritsar rural police in connection with the recovery of 5 kg heroin on January 14, 2024. The CP said that preliminary investigation revealed that Rinku was running a large hawala network to channelize the illegal money of the drug trade to various suppliers.
