Punjab: Health department starts investigation into the death of female patient

Punjab: The health department has started an inquiry into the death of a patient following a caesarean delivery at Malerkotla civil hospital. Relatives of the woman, Amandeep Kaur, have accused the doctor who operated on her on Thursday of negligence. The woman died on Saturday. She was admitted to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala as her condition deteriorated after the operation. Following her death at the Patiala hospital, her relatives, led by trade union leader Zora Singh Cheema, staged a protest in front of the Malerkotla civil hospital.
The protesters accused gynaecologist Neha Garg of negligence and demanded her immediate suspension and registration of a criminal case against her. The doctor denied the allegation, saying the patient was admitted to Rajindra Hospital for further management of complications following a sharp drop in platelet count. SMO Jagjit Singh said the department has started an inquiry and the post-mortem of the deceased woman has already been conducted. The SMO said a committee of doctors constituted by the civil surgeon will investigate the events that led to the death of the patient at the Patiala hospital.
