Progressive Pune: Crimes against women on the rise
Maharashtra: Crimes against women have increased in Pune in recent times. The number of cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act is increasing. The heads of all police stations in the city have been instructed to register crimes against women on priority and try to get them justice as well as strict punishment for the accused. The police is constantly in touch with the victim women, so that they can be provided assistance, ‘police commissioner Amitesh Kumar informed.
The annual review of serious crimes in Pune city was announced on Thursday. Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar was speaking on the occasion. Joint Commissioner of Police Ranjan Kumar Sharma, Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil, Shailesh Balkavde, Praveen Kumar Patil, Arvind Chavariya were present on the occasion. Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, while speaking to reporters, gave information about the serious crimes that took place last year as well as the steps taken by the police.
There has been an increase in crimes against women in the city. Basically, the heads of all police stations have been ordered to register crimes of atrocities against women on priority. School children are being counseled about proper and inappropriate touch. Due to this, the number of cases of atrocities against children is increasing. The police is contacting 1200 complainant women who are victims of atrocities and providing them assistance. The investigating officers have also been instructed to find out whether the victims are being harassed by the accused or any pressure is being put on them. Priority is being given to solving their problems.
There were 93 murders in the city in 2024. Of these, 14 murders took place in January last year. There were 101 murders in the city in 2023. 244 cases of attempted murder were registered in 2023. 244 cases of attempted murder were registered in 2024. There was an increase in crimes of grievous injury in 2024. 1535 cases of grievous injury were registered. 1390 cases were registered in 2023. Orders have been given to register a case against those who spread terror and cause injury. Due to this, crimes related to causing injury have increased.
