Elephant calf undergoing treatment in Nandankanan Zoo dies today

Bhubaneswar: The elephant calf undergoing treatment in Nandankanan Zoological Park died today. It was reportedly 5 to 6 years old.

Reportedly, the elephant calf had an injury in its waist. It had fallen into a 20 feet deep pit in Pokamunda village under Karanjia forest division on January 5. The pit had been dug for irrigation purposes. The baby elephant was then rescued and brought to Nandankanan Zoological Park for treatment.

The baby elephant was undergoing treatment at a special room in the elephant shelter zone. It was being monitored by the veterinarians of Nandankanan and OUAT. The baby elephant was rescued in a critical condition. It had fell in such a difficult spot that it had to be rescued using a crane.

For further recovery and rehabilitation, the calf was at first transferred to the Chandaka Sanctuary and then to Nandankanan Zoo, where it was given specialized care in a safe environment. The calf was rescued after an 18 hour long efforts using a crane.

The veterinarians who had taken care of the baby elephant have expressed grief as the elephant calf dies. “The calf was in a critical condition but we did expected it will be cured soon”, said a veterinarian treating the calf.
