Mercedes-Benz S-Class recalled due to fire risk

Delhi Delhi. Mercedes-Benz India has recalled 386 units of the Maybach S-Class citing a possible defect in the engine control unit (ECU) software. The affected vehicles belong to the seventh-generation S-Class lineup introduced in 2021. According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the ECU software in these models does not meet the current specifications. The Maybach S-Class, introduced as a more luxurious version of the standard S-Class, is one of the brand’s most premium offerings in India.

Mercedes-Benz India has recalled 386 Maybach S-Class units and one standard S-Class unit due to a possible defect in the engine control unit (ECU) software. The affected vehicles were manufactured between April 29, 2021 and January 27, 2024. According to SIAM, faulty ECU software may cause the exhaust temperature to increase, which poses a risk of damage to components such as the engine wiring harness and catalytic converter. The issue can cause a sudden loss of propulsion and increase the risk of fire. While Mercedes-Benz has not commented on the recall, owners of the affected vehicles are advised to contact their nearest dealership. The company is expected to resolve the issue with free repairs to ensure safety.

The Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class is offered with two engine options that combine luxury and performance. The S580 variant is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 mild-hybrid petrol engine that produces 496 BHP and 700 Nm of torque, capable of a 0-100 kmph sprint in 4.8 seconds. The more powerful S680 variant is powered by a 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 engine that produces 603 BHP and 900 Nm of torque, capable of a 0-100 kmph sprint in 4.5 seconds. Both engines are mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox. The Mercedes-Benz Maybach S580 is priced at Rs 2.71 crore (ex-showroom), while the top-end S680 is priced at Rs 3.43 crore (ex-showroom), aimed at those seeking top-tier luxury and performance.
