Jalandhar: Policeman and his wife arrested for abetting suicide
Jalandhar: A 29-year-old youth at Shahkot died by suicide on Wednesday night after he was booked in a case and was allegedly humiliated by the police.
The deceased, identified as Gurvinder Singh, resident of Budhanwal village at Shahkot, and son of a watchman, died by suicide on the night of September 18, after hanging himself from a roof girder at his home at the village.
Three persons, a Nakodar constable Raman, his wife Jyoti and Raman’s mother-in-law, have been arrested by the police. A case under Section 108 of the BNS (abetment to suicide) was registered against the trio at police station at 11.40 pm last night.
Kewal Singh (70), Gurvinder’s father, in his complaint to the police, said a false case had been registered against Gurvinder amid an ongoing household dispute between Gurvinder’s friend Raman and his wife Jyoti.
Kewal alleged that following humiliation at the police station, Gurvinder took the extreme step.
As per Kewal’s complaint, Raman, a constable at the Nakodar police station, had a dispute with his wife Jyoti since long.
Kewal said Gurvinder and Raman were good friends, who visited each other often, and Raman had been having his meals at their house for the past two months. Sometime, Gurvinder also handed over food to him at his house.
Kewal alleged on September 14, Raman called Gurvinder to his house and Gurvinder went with food only to see Jyoti and Raman fighting.
Kewal said Gurvinder tried to resolve the matter and returned home. Jyoti got a false complaint registered against Gurvinder after which the police came to his house in the night and took Gurvinder to the police station. Villagers approached the police to get him released and brought him back.
Kewal said on September 18, Gurvinder went to the police station to bring back some of his belongings. Jyoti and her mother were present along with other family members there.
Kewal said they humiliated his wife Amarjit Kaur and the police also harassed Gurvinder. Kewal said that shocked with the behaviour of Jyoti, Raman, Jyoti’s mother and police employees, Gurvinder died by suicide at 12.15 am.
SHO of the Shahkot police station Aman Saini said, “Gurvinder died by suicide due to a case registered against him. No police harassment took place. However, he was upset due to the case. Raman, his wife and mother-in-law have been arrested and are being presented in a court.”
