BUSINESS: After major criticism of the letter from the mother of a 26-year-old woman who died due to workload, accounting firm Ernst & Young (EY) has announced its intention to improve the working environment. Ernst & Young said in a statement, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic and untimely death of Anna Sebastian in July 2024 and offer our deepest condolences to the bereaved family.” The accounting firm’s statement also said: “We take the family correspondence with the utmost seriousness and humility. We value the well-being of all employees and are committed to providing the best work environment for our 100,000 people at EY. “And we will continue to look for ways to improve.” In her letter, the mother expressed her excitement about her daughter starting her career at the company, which was her first job.

The letter, addressed to EY India chairman Rajiv Memani, has attracted widespread attention on social media.

The mother claimed that her daughter died due to excessive workload and no representative of the company was present at the funeral. She also pointed out that the tragic incident happened just four months after her daughter started working in the company. “She was full of enthusiasm for life, her dreams and the future. EY was her first job and she was happy to be part of such a prestigious company. But four months later, on July 20, 2024, I received the assignment: “It is devastating news that my world has been destroyed as Anna has passed away when she was just 26 years old,” she wrote in the letter.
