Chandigarh: Waste separation plant to be built soon in Dadu Majra

Chandigarh: To ensure 100 per cent waste segregation, an automated solid waste segregation system will soon be installed at the Dadu Majra dumping ground. The municipal corporation has received the lowest bid for the project. According to the municipal corporation, out of a total of four companies that participated in the tender process, Ani Astechno Private Limited has quoted the lowest bid of Rs 2.33 crore. The work of setting up the plant will begin soon. The municipal corporation had estimated the cost of the system at Rs 5.22 crore, but it received bids of less than 50 per cent of the amount in the tender process. At least 70 tonnes per day (TPD) of mixed waste will be separated into dry and wet waste before processing at the plant.

The city generates around 500 TPD of waste every day, of which 300 TPD is wet waste, including horticultural waste. The municipal corporation has the capacity to process only 430 TPD of waste per day. Therefore, 70 TPD of mixed waste remains unprocessed. The plant will bring great relief to the residents of Dadu Majra, who have been facing several health and hygiene issues due to the dump located nearby. The civic body will also install a shredder at the solid waste processing plant, which will process 5 TPD of dry waste, including bed sheets, car seat covers, mattresses, travel bags and other items, which are currently dumped at the landfill without being processed.
