7 people died in Bengaluru building collapse due to heavy rains: PM Modi expressed grief

Karnataka : Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his deepest condolences following a tragic accident that occurred during heavy rains in Bengaluru. He expressed condolences for the deaths caused by the collapse of the roof of the Bowring Government Hospital in Bengaluru and announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 to the injured.

The accident occurred when heavy rain suddenly began in Bengaluru around 5 p.m. on Wednesday. This heavy downpour, which lasted for about an hour, brought relief from the heat in many parts of the city, but also disrupted normal life. Hailstorms accompanied the downpour in areas like Shivajinagar, Vijayanagar, Malleswaram, and Gandhinagar, causing waterlogging and traffic disruption.

The heavy rain and winds caused trees to fall at several locations, damaging electric poles and signboards. Meanwhile, the roof of the Bowring Government Hospital in the Shivajinagar area suddenly collapsed, burying street vendors sitting in small stalls along the roof.

Upon receiving information about the incident, municipal and disaster management teams arrived at the scene and began relief and rescue operations. After clearing the debris, it was confirmed that a total of seven people, including three children, had died in the accident. Several others were seriously injured and are being treated at the same hospital.

The accident caused panic in the entire area. The local administration immediately evacuated the area and intensified rescue operations. Most of the deceased were involved in small roadside businesses.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also arrived at the scene upon receiving information about the incident. He assessed the situation and obtained detailed information from officials. He then visited the injured hospitalized and inquired about their health.

The Chief Minister directed officials to expedite relief work and provide all possible assistance to the affected families. He stated that necessary steps would be taken to prevent such incidents from recurring.

This entire incident has raised questions about the poor infrastructure and safety arrangements in Bengaluru during rains. The administration is now investigating the entire matter.
