60% people are at risk of heat stroke: Medical University study

Tamil Nadu : A study conducted by the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University found that 60 per cent of the population is at risk of heat-related health problems.

It is reported that 46 per cent of the population has been affected by dehydration and heatstroke due to climate change and sudden rise in temperatures in summers.

A team led by Dr. K. Narayanasamy, Vice-Chancellor of the university, recently surveyed 3,217 people. The survey was conducted on a question-answer basis on aspects such as coping with seasonal climate changes, taking preparedness measures and staying alert.

The results reveal the following:

The study was conducted to find out the level of understanding of heatstroke and its effects in society. 80 per cent of people are aware that climate change is the main reason for the rise in temperature. However, what is worrying is that only 11 per cent of them are aware of the severity of heatstroke and its effects.

The study found that 50 per cent of the participants did not have an alternative place to stay or a cool place to escape the extreme heat. Similarly, the study found that 29 per cent of people did not understand the advisories issued regarding heat wave.

The poor and common people, elderly, children, pregnant women etc. are at greater risk of harm from heat wave. Similarly, uninterrupted electricity and adequate drinking water supply cannot be ensured.

In this regard, Vice Chancellor Dr. Narayanasamy said that there is a need to increase health awareness among the general public and ensure necessary infrastructure to protect against the effects of heat wave.
