545 petitioners received assistance of Rs 29.37 crore

Thoothukudi: As part of the Makkaludan Mudhalvar scheme, MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi distributed welfare assistance of `29.37 lakh to 545 beneficiaries in the presence of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Minister P Geetha Jeevan during a function at the Collectorate here on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, Kanimozhi said the scheme aims to address the needs of the underprivileged and ensure government services to the marginalized section of the society in urban areas. Makkaludan Mudhalwar camps, which were scheduled to begin on December 18, 2023. , were held from January 11 to 31, 2024, due to recent floods.

More than 7,133 petitions were received in 45 camps organized across the district. Of them, 4,071 were approved and 941 others were rejected citing ineligibility. Whereas, out of the rejected petitions, 545 petitions were resolved and the needs of the petitioners were met, the MP said.

Furthermore, Minister Geeta Jeevan said most of the petitions disposed were regarding patta name transfer and property tax. “One of the petitioners changed the name of his patta land after a 12-year long struggle,” he said.

Collector G Lakshmipathy, Mayor Jegan Periyasamy, MLA Markandeyan, District Panchayat President A Brahmasakthi, Commissioner L Mathubalan and others were present on the occasion.
