4.29 lakh houses built for the poor in the last 5 years: Tamil Nadu government

Tamil Nadu: The government has reported that 4.29 lakh houses have been built for the poor in Tamil Nadu in the last five years.
A press release issued by the Public Relations Department today (March 7) stated that in the five years since 2021, 429,394 houses have been built for the poor at a cost of ₹19,694 crore, 5,281 infrastructure projects in Adi Dravidian areas have been improved at a cost of ₹482 crore, and 23.56 lakh poor families have been given free house pattas. The government aims to eliminate all slums in Tamil Nadu and provide permanent housing for all. To this end, it has decided to build 8 lakh permanent houses by 2030.
The government has approved a ₹7,000 crore scheme for 2 lakh families to build houses for the poor and needy. Under this scheme, 179,850 permanent houses have been built out of a target of 200,000 homes in just two years. The remaining homes are currently under construction. This year, 100,000 more homes will be built at a cost of ₹3,500 crore. In the two-year period from 2024-2026, 179,850 homes have been completed, and 120,150 more are being built.
Not just in the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam project, 10,045 permanent homes have been approved for Sri Lankan Tamils with an allocation of ₹589 crore, and 7,469 have been completed. Additionally, 179,850 homes are being built. Under the apartment project, 58,211 homes have been completed at a cost of ₹8,384 crore; and construction work on 53,467 homes is underway. The press release also said that a record 58,211 houses have been completed during the 2021-2026 DMK rule.
