245 electric buses will be in service by February: Metropolitan Transport Corporation

Tamil Nadu: The Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation has announced that 245 more electric buses will be in service in Chennai by the end of this month.

The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation has decided to use electric buses as an alternative to diesel buses. Accordingly, an agreement was signed to purchase 625 electric buses, of which 380 were put into service in the first phase.

The bus service, which began in June 2025 from the Vyasarpadi depot in Chennai, is also operating from depots in Perumbakkam and Poonamallee. The Manakamana Transport Corporation is in the process of putting the remaining 245 buses into service.

Manakamana Transport Corporation officials said:

After the manufacturing of the remaining 245 electric buses is completed, a trial run will be conducted soon. They will be put into service by the end of February. Of these, 145 buses will be added from the Pallavan Illam workshop and 100 from the Thandaiyarpet workshop. He said the Manakamana Transport Corporation is in the process of purchasing 600 more electric buses in the second phase.
