20 leaders killed, killed in Bangladesh violence

Bangladesh: Violence continues in Bangladesh. On Tuesday, the bodies of at least 20 leaders of the Awami League and its allied organizations and their family members were recovered across the country. At least 10 people were killed in attacks and violence in Satkhira since Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister and left the country. The houses of Awami League leaders and workers were vandalized and looted.

At least 11 people were killed in mob attacks in Comilla. Six people died after miscreants set fire to the three-storey house of former councilor Mohammad Shah Alam in Ashoktala. Their bodies were recovered from the house on Monday night and Tuesday morning. These include five teenagers. Eyewitnesses said that on Monday, an angry mob attacked Shah Alam’s house in the area. Some people climbed to the third floor of the house. Meanwhile, the mob set fire to the ground floor of the house. Later, people who took shelter on the third floor were burnt to death due to smoke. At least 10 people were injured in the incident. One of them, who is seriously injured, is undergoing treatment in the ICU.

At the same time, four people died in a fire set by an angry mob at the house of Natore-2 (Sadar and Naldanga) constituency MP Shafiqul Islam Shimul. On Tuesday morning, bodies were found in several rooms, balconies and roofs of the MP’s house ‘Jannati Palace’. According to eyewitnesses and local residents, after hearing the news of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, the angry mob set fire to MP Shafiqul’s house. His younger brother’s five-storey building next to the house and the MP’s old house were also set on fire. All three houses were looted. In Feni, locals recovered the bodies of two Juba League leaders. Of these, the body of Juba League leader Mushfiqur Rahim was found under a bridge in Sonagaji Upazila. Mushfiqur was the office secretary of Dhalia Union Juba League. The body of another Juba League leader Badsha Mia was found in Feni Sadar upazila in the morning. In Lalmonirhat, locals recovered six bodies from the house of district AL joint general secretary Suman Khan. The house was set on fire by a mob on Monday. In Bogra, a mob killed two Juba League leaders. The incidents took place in Dirkhipara and Shahjahanpur upazilas.
