135th Ambedkar Jayanti in Nalgonda Marked by Minimal Celebration
Ramagiri, April 14: The 135th birth anniversary of the architect of the Indian Constitution, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, was celebrated in a nominal manner at Mahatma Gandhi University in Nalgonda district. The university VC has deliberately belittled the Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations, which were supposed to be attended by thousands of students, and has insulted the dignity of Ambedkar by organizing them with just a few professors within four walls. This is not just an insult to a great man, but also an attack on the self-respect of thousands of Dalit and Bahujan students studying in the university, said the student unions.
He said that the VC’s negligence in ignoring the requests of the student unions to hold it officially and solemnly is highly condemnable. He said that leaving the place without answering the students’ questions is the height of irresponsibility. This is not just an issue of Ambedkar, but also the issue of restricting the birth anniversaries of great personalities like Babu Jagjivan Ram and Mahatma Jyotirao Phule in the name of NSS, which is a systematic insult to the Dalit and Bahujan communities.
Student unions are making serious allegations that the VC’s behavior is completely against BC, SC and ST students and that he is treating Dalits as untouchables. In this context, angry leaders of Madiga student unions and Bahujan students burned the effigy of the VC at the University Arts College and protested strongly. Bahujan student unions demanded that a thorough investigation be conducted immediately into the incident and strict action be taken against those responsible, and that the birth anniversaries of the great personalities be celebrated officially and with dignity from now on. Sweros Students Union State Vice President Anumula Suresh Swero, MSF President Macharla Sudhir Madiga, SFI leaders Karrem Ravi, PDSU President Harsha and leaders of other student unions participated in this program.
