New Delhi: Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu on Monday announced that 104 airports across India are now running on 100 percent renewable energy, marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to make aviation infrastructure more sustainable.
Sharing the update on social media platform X, the minister said the achievement reflects the government’s commitment to clean energy and sustainability under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The minister said, “104 Indian airports are now running on 100 percent renewable energy, up from 0 in 2014.”
He further said, “New India is walking its talk on sustainability, and moving towards PM Narendra Modi’s target of net zero by 2070.”
This milestone means that 104 airports now meet their operational power needs entirely from renewable energy sources, including electricity generated from on-site solar installations as well as renewable electricity purchased through long-term agreements, such as hydropower.
Over the past few years, India’s airport sector has steadily embraced clean energy.
In June 2022, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport became the first airport in the country to meet its entire power demand from a combination of on-site solar power and hydropower.
According to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), approximately 6 percent of the airport’s electricity is generated by its own solar power plant, while the remaining 94 percent is obtained through long-term hydropower purchase agreements.
This change is estimated to reduce indirect carbon emissions by approximately 200,000 tons per year.
Meanwhile, Cochin International Airport became the world’s first fully solar-powered airport after commissioning its solar power project in 2015.
Since then, the airport has expanded its solar generation capacity and earned international recognition for its environmental sustainability initiatives. This new announcement builds on a June 2026 statement by the Civil Aviation Ministry that more than 88 airports have already switched to 100 percent green energy, and the government aims to achieve net-zero emissions at all Indian airports by 2030.
